Army uniform of the United States Army will undergo a sea change from the autumn of 2005. All soldiers have to wear Army uniform while on duty unless in exceptional cases such as soldiers traveling on Air Mobility Command, (AMC) and non AMC flights on permanent change of station (PCS) orders, temporary duty (TDY), emergency leave or space-available flights.

The new Army uniform changes the rigid look of the United States Army. The suede, tan desert boots are in place of the polished black boots. The new ceremonial uniform is invisible to enemies but visible to fellow mates. The US flag emblem is an infrared feedback element, which is not visible to all. This army combat uniform (ACU) is as per a new digital camouflage pattern based on Marine Corps ‘MARPAT’ scheme. This ACU is a universal pattern, which can be in use in urban deserts or in forest environments.

All soldiers must wear clean trousers, pants or skirts with proper fittings. Pockets should not be bulky. Belt tips and buckles should be free from scratches and well polished too. Medals and ribbons should be sparkling clean. Sleeves and jackets should be roll pressed with no creases. United States army soldiers cannot sew military creases into the Army uniform. Overall appearance should be neat and clean.

Generally, soldiers of the United States Army should not wear keys/key chains or electronic devices on the Army uniform during parades or ceremonies or during performing special duties. In general, attaching such keys/chains to the belt, belt loops or the waistband on the uniform is the norm. If required the commander allows the soldier to wear a black colored pager or a cell phone on the waistband or the belt. The soldier can carry any other electronic device in the hand, pocket, briefcase, and purse or bag only if the commander issues such orders.

When in Army uniform soldiers of United States Army cannot place their hands in their pockets, except to keep or take out anything.
